Hi, my name is Dewald.
I am a blind musician, artist, piano technician, and writer, living in South Africa.
I became blind at the age of ten, due to a brain operation to remove a tumor.
After I became blind, I had to learn to do all kind of things again.
I had to go to another school, study to read Braille, learn to walk independently, etc.
But one of the things that bothered me the most was that I couldn’t draw pictures anymore. I loved drawing pictures and painting in class.
But somewhere along the line, I tought myself to draw and paint. I am constantly learning to add depth to drawings, and my next goal is to form raised-drawings that everybody can experience, blind or not.
When I paint, I use something to form the raised lines first, and then I would colour in the rest.
I also love writing stories, short stories, some poems, and novels.
I love to play piano, and I got my Honours degree in Piano Performance at the University of the Free State a few years ago.
I like experimenting with different instruments, and can play, to some degree, the cello, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, ukulele, the harp, accordion, autoharp and penny whistle.
But my favourite still is the piano.
I tune and repair pianos. That’s my main business.
I have a separate site which you are welcome to go visit
